Many of my patients ask me why it is necessary to receive regular “maintenance” Chiropractic care. I respond by saying that, just like dental hygiene your body requires spinal hygiene. Ask yourself the following questions: are you spending hours a day sitting at a desk or computer? Do you slouch in front of the TV? Does everyday stress affect your posture? Have you ever had a minor fall, accident or injury that might interfere with how well your body functions? Or do you sometimes have aches and pain that show up out of the blue? If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions above, then you are a perfect candidate for regular Chiropractic care.
As humans we generally think that aches and pains will disappear after a couple of days. If they don’t, especially after we have tried to suppress them with medication, they can become problematic and at times debilitating. The problem is that we treat the symptom first instead of looking for the cause of the problem. Repeating daily activities such as bending, lifting and twisting may result in a “bad back”. If it rains and there is a hole in your roof, which leaves a stain on your ceiling, would you paint over the stain to cover it up, or would you fix the hole? The same could be said for symptoms. You can cover it up by taking drugs/medicine, but if you don’t address the cause they just come back over and over again. As Chiropractors we look at the relationship between the skeletal and muscular system and how that affects the nervous system.
The nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions in the human body. When one of the bones in the spine goes out of alignment it can put direct or indirect pressure on the nervous system. Chiropractors are experts in detecting these misalignments and correct them with safe, gentle, hands on manipulations.
Chiropractic’s message is that the proactive care of one’s body and wise lifestyle choices are necessary to achieve health.
My advice for a healthy life style is to do moderate exercise at least 3 to 4 times per week. Eat a well-balanced diet to make sure you give your body all the proper nutrients, vitamins and minerals it requires. Drink plenty of pure clean water. Sleep at least 6 to 8 hours per night. Have a positive mental attitude. Watch your posture to reduce mechanical stress on you back and let your Chiropractor help preserve spinal integrity through correcting misalignments. Every person is unique. With gentle Chiropractic adjustments you can restore balance to the body. I consider “maintenance” care as getting your spine checked at least every 4 to 6 weeks.
